Nintendo Wins Copyright Lawsuit Against MariCar

In February 2017 Nintendo filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against MariCar, a company running go-kart tours in Japan. The company rented out go-karts that tourists would use to tour various city locations while dressed in costumes resembling well-known characters including Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach and Toad.

In September the Tokyo District Court ruled that MariCar had infringed on Nintendo’s copyright and ordered the company to pay Nintendo 10 million yen. MariCar, however, continues to provide their go-kart service and other character costumes such as Winnie the Pooh, Superman, and the Minions, still appear to be available.
