Names for 2020 Olympic Mascots Announced Topics

On July 22 the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee revealed the names of the official mascots. The name for the official mascot of the Summer Olympics is Miraitowa which is a combination of the Japanese words “mirai” which means “future” and “towa” meaning “eternity”. The name for the official mascot of the Summer Paralympics is Someity. Someity’s name originates from a type of Japanese cherry blossom known as “Someiyoshino”. Someity’s pink checkered pattern was inspired by Japanese cherry blossoms. However, with the addition of the “ty” sound at the end, the pronounciation is also very similar to the English phrase “so mighty”.

As with the images of the mascots themselves, trademark clearance searches were conducted and trademarks to the names have been applied for.
